"Oh, no need to be so wary. I'm merely a salesman. Call me Ogre. I hope to get to know you, young lady."
- Ogre to Aya during their first meeting
Ogre is a mysterious individual who plays a supporting role in the game. He claims to be a wandering salesman, and assists Aya every now and then during her quest to save her father.
Appearance[]
Ogre wears a black three-piece suit - a shirt, a jacket, a vest, and a jacket - with a black tie and black pants. He also has a black bowler hat that he's only seen wearing during his initial encounter with Aya.
If the player manages to collect all 21 Gems (in the original release) or all 20 Gems (in the 2020 remake) and obtain the True Ending, he's briefly seen without his jacket in the game's bonus scene.
His most prominent features are his pale skin and bald head. His red eyes, elf-like ears, and a brief moment where he takes on a demonic appearance in IF Mode are visual hints he's not exactly human.
Personality[]
Ogre is initially presented as an eccentric-yet-polite individual who manages to maintain a calm demeanor in spite of the insanity happening throughout the mansion. He's shown to be concerned about Aya's safety, and is willing to assist the young girl in her quest to rescue her father, though he prefers to do so by pointing her in the right direction rather than fully guiding her.
In reality, Ogre is a man who enjoys observing chaos unfold around him, and especially loves watching the various antics of foolish humans. While he mostly kept his distance whenever such events occurred, Ogre decided to take part in the madness happening in the Drevis Mansion to further entertain himself, though he keeps his involvement to a bare minimum, as he doesn't want to put focus on himself.
That isn't to say he's pure evil, as Ogre does hold a soft spot for kindhearted humans, thinking that the world would be boring if only lunatics ran about, as well as believing that heroes allow lunatics to really shine. In addition, his polite demeanor doesn't appear to be a facade, as he still maintains a friendly attitude even after revealing his character and his motives - or rather, the lack a motive - to Robin.
Ogre appears to have supernatural powers, specifically teleportation. It's also suggested he has the power to shapeshift as well, though this ability isn't seen in the game.
History[]
During the events of Mad Father[]
Following Monika Drevis returning as a vengeful ghost on the eve of the anniversary of her death, Ogre manages to sneak his way into Aya's bedroom while the young girl has a frightful encounter with two monsters and a mysterious blonde boy. When Aya returns to her room, he notes the interesting collection of books she has before telling her to not be afraid of him, claiming he's simply a salesman. He then informs her that the monsters are her father's test subjects, who have come back thanks to a curse, and wish to seek revenge on him. Upon hearing that, Aya is ready to brave past them to rescue Alfred, which Ogre questions by pointing out that this is her father's retribution for what he had done to them. Aya simply ignores him and heads on, which makes Ogre wonder if she's isn't able to fully comprehend the subject's suffering just yet.
In the 2020 remake, Ogre is later seen in the Mansion 2F Archives, where he's near the bookcase that contains the book, "Data on live experimentation." Upon being approached by Aya, he vanishes from sight.
Once Aya enters the Basement 1F Laboratory and learns from her maid, Maria, that her mother has returned from the dead as a ghost, Ogre notes that the maid has passed out before she could answer Aya's question, then points out that it seems Aya's father has gone further into the mansion's basement. As Aya wonders if her mother has truly come back, he informs her that she'll only know by pressing on.
Within the very next room, after Aya witnesses the ghost of her mother dragging away her father, Ogre reveals that her mother is the one responsible for bringing about the curse. The young girl initially refuses to believe that, as her mother loved Alfred, but then considers that maybe she hated how he was spending time with Maria. Uncertain, Aya decides to head off to discover the truth.
In the 2020 remake, upon arriving at the Basement 2F Chapel, Ogre warns Aya that she might not be able to return the upper-rooms for a while if she continues to journey forwards.
Upon arriving inside the Basement 2F T-Junction, Ogre is seen again, claiming that the passage he's in was a bit cluttered, so he cleaned it up a bit. If talked to, he'll ask Aya if she solved the puzzle in the upcoming room.
At the Basement 3F Corner Passage, Aya passes out after a frightful encounter with a long-haired woman. Ogre arrives and carries her to the left Private Room so she can rest for a bit.
Once Aya arrives at the Basement 3F Laboratory, Ogre informs her that the portal inside leads to the Other World, where her parents reside. He warns her that a harsh reality may be waiting for her in there, but upon seeing her determination, he decides to give her some Magic Water. He informs her that it's a new product of his company, and that it has the power to seal away the curse and rescue both of her parents. Afterwards, if talked to again, he offers to teleport her back to room if she so desires. (Which can be helpful if the player had missed a few Gems.)
Leaving behind her lamp and her chainsaw, Aya jumps into the portal. Ogre is eager to see how the events will play out, and decides to watch from afar. During the events that lead up to the game's True Ending, Ogre gives Robin some mysterious medicine off-screen so that the young boy can quickly recover from the wounds he received from Maria a bit earlier in the story.
During the True Ending, as the mansion is burning to the ground, Ogre is seen approaching Alfred's dead body. Ogre begins to tell him that he admires "foolish humans," as one mad with desire is more fearsome than any demon. Claiming that Alfred may be the most foolish of all, he offers the scientist the opportunity to come with him to his world, where he could experiment to his heart's content. Alfred agrees, thus Ogre revives the doctor and takes them to his universe.
Should the player manage to obtain all 21 Gems (in the original version) or all 20 Gems (in the 2020 remake), a bonus scene has Ogre discovering that Alfred had made an older clone of his daughter, Aya. Ogre comments that Alfred must still miss the original Aya, to which the scientist simply nods. Ogre then welcomes the woman as a new addition to his world, then tells Alfred he hopes the mad scientist can one day show her the world he originally came from before leaving.
During the events of IF Mode.[]
Ogre resides at the Mansion 1F Cafeteria, where he is seen drinking tea. As Robin approaches him, Ogre notes how impressive it is that Robin recovered from his injuries rather swiftly, to which the young boy responds by pointing out it was due to the medicine he gave him earlier. Robin then asks him who he is, since he doesn't appear to be a resident of the mansion, nor one of Alfred's test subjects, to which Ogre claims he's nothing but a wandering salesman.
Ogre then admits to Robin how he enjoyed witnessing the many crazy events that happened throughout the night, and how far some people would go for love. Taken by surprise from this, Robin asks him what his end goal is. Ogre admits he has none, and transforms into a more demonic form as he admits that he enjoys simply watching deranged humans. When Robin attempts to attack him, Ogre teleports behind him and states he enjoys observing virtuous human as well, since a world of lunatics wouldn't be very entertaining. He also reveals that's why he revived Robin instead of letting him die. Ogre then asks Robin to stand against the madmen of the world before leaving.
During the events of Blood Mode[]
Inside the Mansion 1F Nursery, Ogre informs the much-older Aya that after she bit into the weirdly-colored apple that she received from an old woman, her soul has entered a dimension that acts as a recreation of the night that changed her life. The dimension exists due to her father's lingering will, who holds the same strong emotions as the original did for Aya, and if she wants to escape, she has to make peace with him.
After that, Ogre makes minor appearances in Mansion 2F Archives and Basement 2F T-Junction, where he plays the same role he did in Normal Mode.
Connections to "Misao"[]
While it's never outright stated, it's heavily implied that Ogre is actually Onigawara from an earlier game the creator of Mad Father made called Misao. Of note is their striking similarity, sporting a bald head, pointy ears, and red eyes. When Ogre is seen without his jacket during the bonus cutscene, his resemblance to Onigawara is more apparent.
The two also have similar personalities, being very polite and maintaining a calm composure in spite of the insanity happening around them. They are also shown to be concerned about the safety of the game's protagonist. (Aya in Mad Father, and Aki in Misao.)
It should be noted, however, that Onigawara is implied to be younger than Ogre, due to him being a student council president - and thus a teenager - compared to Ogre being a wandering salesman who runs a company. However, given that Ogre isn't exactly human, it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to assume that he's capable of changing his appearance to suit the role he wants to play.
Another thing connecting the two is Onigawara's friendship with a character nicknamed Library, a young woman who's heavily implied to be the Aya Clone that Alfred Drevis made after the scientist was taken in to live in Ogre's world. Speaking of which, the mad scientist also makes an appearance in Misao and is even mentioned by Library, though in both cases he's never addressed by his name.
Trivia[]
- A LINE sticker seems to imply that the Save Crow may belong to him.
- Since Robin only shows up in the game's True Ending, it can be assumed that Ogre only saves Robin's life if Aya chooses to rescue Alfred instead of letting Monika take him away, and if Aya chooses to rescue Maria after Alfred betrays her. Otherwise, Ogre leaves him for dead.
