"I have a dream, you know. I want to be a doctor like you. I want to help people suffering from the same illness as me. Do you think I can do that...?"

- Jean to Aya

Jean Rooney is a poor girl who hails from a faraway village. She only shows up in Normal Mode's True Ending, though she is given a more prominent role in the 2020 remake's Blood Mode.

Appearance[]

Jean is a young woman with long reddish-brown hair that has bangs parted on both sides, and beautiful green eyes. She wears a long white dress, and has two yellow pegs on the left side of her bangs.

Her original design is mostly the same, though her hair was more dark-brown.

Personality[]

Jean is shown to a sweet and energetic young woman, if somewhat shy. She blushed when Aya noted how beautiful her green eyes are, noting that no one has ever complimented her before. Additionally, Jean notes to herself how beautiful Aya looks upon their first meeting. She also aspires to become a doctor in hopes of curing people afflicted with her illness.

Following her death, she begins to haunt Aya's soul once it arrives in the dimension that acts as a recreation of the infamous night that changed Aya's life. While mostly staying out of sight and/or reach, Jean does attempt to drown Aya at one point. However, despite that one incident, it's implied that Jean is very reluctant to actually kill Aya, which seems to be further supported by the fact that one of her CG shots is titled "Reluctance".

History[]

Prior to and during the events of Mad Father[]

Jean was born a feeble girl. The local doctor she had been visiting had given up on her after learning she and her family were poor, and couldn't pay his fees. In the game's True Ending, Jean eventually learns about the Drevis Clinic and how they give free checkups to their patients, thus she sets out to find them. Along the way, she happens to cross paths with an older woman named Maria, who's riding on her coach with some horses. Maria offers to help escort Jean half of the way there before they part ways.

Upon arriving, Jean is ecstatic about finding the place while noting how its located in the middle of nowhere. Knocking on the door, a woman named Aya Drevis answers, with Jean noting how beautiful she looks. Jean then informs Aya that she was born feeble, and that her local doctor had given up on her due to being poor. Aya assures her they don't ask money from their patients, and the two properly introduce themselves. Jean then begins to have a coughing fit, resulting in Aya ushering Jean into her house.

Inside, Aya notes how impressive it is she made the trip, to which Jean reveals she met "a kind old woman" who took her part of the way there by coach. Aya then instructs Jean to lie down on her table, with Jean feeling nervous. She then hears horses, and wonders if they're in the back of the building.

Aya, after equipping her mask, tells Jean to stand very still while she applies anesthesia, before noting that Jean has "very pretty eyes." Jean, feeling flustered, thanks Aya for the compliment, to which Aya teases her if she's feeling nervous. As Jean closes her eyes and prepares to go to sleep, she asks Aya if she can make her better, to which the young doctor assures her that Jean will "never suffer again."

While the original version of the game implied that Aya killed Jean and turned her into a doll, a bonus scene included in the 2.03 version, as well as the 2020 remake, suggests otherwise. If the player manages to collect all 21 Gems (in the original version) or all 20 Gems (in the 2020 remake), this scene reveals that Aya simply killed Jean to put an end to her suffering. Aya didn't turn her into a doll out of respect to the victims of her father's experiments, as well as promising Robin that she would never forgot about them or the events that happened to her.

During the events of Blood Mode[]

Jean's ghost serves as a minor secondary antagonist in this mode. Upon learning that Aya's soul has arrived in the dimension that acts as a recreation of the infamous night that changed Aya's life, she decides to stalk Aya at various points in the game.

Jean is first seen in the Mansion Entrance, where she's sitting on a nearby sofa. Upon Aya approaching her, she vanishes.

Later, in the Basement 1F Corridor, Jean briefly follows Aya when she passes behind one of the middle pillars, but vanishes again after passing behind the next one.

In the Basement 2F Toilets, after Aya obtains the Cell Key from inside one of the toilets and washes it off in the sink, Jean attempts to drown Aya. If the player reacts in time, Aya manages to move out of the way. If the player doesn't, Aya's head gets pushed into the sink's water, and the player enters a QTE in order to escape.

Halfway in the Tunnels Hidden Passage, Jean briefly appears in the reflection of a water puddle.

MF2020JeanConfrontsAya

Jean confronts Aya.

As Aya head into the Basement 3F, Jean's ghost confronts Aya from behind. After asking Aya if she can make her better, Jean reveals to Aya her dream of becoming a doctor so that she can save people who have the same illness as her, then asks if Aya thinks she can achieve that. With tears forming in her eyes, she then tells Aya that she wanted to keep living. Though Aya doesn't say anything about this, its implied she was shaken by what Jean had said.

At the Basement 3F Corner Passage, Jean leaves a message on the wall on the far-right. Examining it reveals the phrase "MURDERER". After that, Jean is not seen nor referred to again for the rest of the mode.
